Teams are ordered within each division by win percentage, then head-to-head, conference record and point differential. Tags show the current playoff seed, games back of the last Play-In spot, or elimination, all from games played to date. Division and league records are shown once the full season is in the feed.

How NBA Playoff Teams Are Seeded

Every team is ranked by record within its conference; winning the division does not guarantee a seed. Seeds 1 to 6 qualify directly, seeds 7 to 10 play the Play-In Tournament for the last two places and seeds 11 to 15 are out. Ties are broken by head-to-head, then division winner over non-winner, division record, conference record, record against playoff teams and point differential.

Every one of the 30 NBA teams listed here has its own page with record, seed, schedule and playoff path, all updated automatically. The playoff picture ranks the same teams by seed, and the bracket shows where they land.

NBA playoff teams FAQ

How many teams make the NBA playoffs?

16 teams play in the playoff bracket, eight per conference, and 20 reach the postseason: seeds 1 to 6 qualify directly and seeds 7 to 10 play the Play-In Tournament for the last two places.

Do division winners get a top seed?

No. Since 2015-16 seeds go purely by record within the conference; winning the division only matters as a tiebreaker.

How many divisions are in the NBA?

Six, three per conference: Atlantic, Central and Southeast in the East; Northwest, Pacific and Southwest in the West. Each has five teams.

How are ties in the NBA standings broken?

Head-to-head record first, then division winner over non-winner, division record (same division only), conference record, record against playoff teams in the own conference, then the other conference, then point differential.

How does the NBA Play-In Tournament work?

In each conference No. 7 hosts No. 8 (the winner is the No. 7 seed) and No. 9 hosts No. 10 (the loser is out). The loser of 7 v 8 then hosts the winner of 9 v 10, and that winner is the No. 8 seed. Every Play-In game is a single game.
