Magic number = 162 + 1 – leader’s wins – chaser’s losses: any combination of that many wins by the leader and losses by the chaser clinches. Division: vs the second-placed team. Playoff spot: vs the first team outside the top 6. Bye: vs the third-best division leader. E# = elimination number from the last playoff spot. * Games a non-leader needs the leader to lose (plus its own wins) to catch up.

The MLB magic numbers above are recalculated after every game. For the race itself see the wild card standings; for what the seeds would produce, the projected bracket.

MLB magic numbers FAQ

How is a magic number calculated?

Games in the season plus one, minus the leader’s wins, minus the chaser’s losses. Each leader win or chaser loss cuts it by one; at zero it is clinched.

What is the magic number to clinch a bye?

For the top two division leaders, it is measured against the third-best division leader, because only division winners can take seeds 1 and 2.

Can a team clinch a playoff spot before its division?

Yes. The playoff-spot number is measured against the first team outside the six, which is usually smaller than the division number.

What is an elimination number?

The mirror of a magic number: the combination of a chaser’s losses and the last playoff team’s wins that ends its season.

Which AL teams have clinched?

New York Yankees.

Which NL teams have clinched?

Milwaukee Brewers.
