How the MLB Playoffs Work
How the MLB postseason works, explained in plain language: who qualifies and how the six seeds per league are decided, the four rounds from the best-of-three Wild Card Series to the best-of-seven World Series, why the top two seeds skip the first round, why there is no reseeding, who gets home field in each series, the tiebreakers that replaced Game 163, and how the format has changed. This applies to the 2026 postseason.
MLB Playoff Format: Who Qualifies
Six teams from each league, 12 in total. The three division winners are seeded 1 to 3 by record; the three best remaining teams are the wild cards, seeded 4 to 6. A wild card can have a better record than a division winner and still sit below it: division titles decide seeds 1 to 3.
The Four Rounds
Four best-of-three series in three days. No. 3 hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5, every game at the higher seed’s park. Seeds 1 and 2 rest.
Best of five, 2-2-1. The No. 1 seed meets the 4/5 winner and the No. 2 seed the 3/6 winner. No reseeding.
Best of seven, 2-3-2. The ALCS and NLCS winners are the league champions and take the pennant to the World Series.
Best of seven, 2-3-2. Home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record. Game 1 is October 23; Game 7, if needed, October 31.
Byes, Pairings and Home Field
Two byes per league
Since the 2022 expansion to 12 teams the top two division winners in each league skip the Wild Card Series. The third division winner plays, as the No. 3 seed, and hosts the No. 6 seed.
No reseeding
The bracket is fixed once the Wild Card Series are set: the 4/5 winner goes to the No. 1 seed, the 3/6 winner to the No. 2 seed. A No. 6 seed that upsets the No. 3 seed faces the No. 2 seed, not the No. 1.
Home field by round
Wild Card Series: all games at the higher seed. Division Series 2-2-1 and LCS 2-3-2: higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2 and the decider. World Series: the pennant winner with the better record hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7.
Tiebreakers
There has been no Game 163 since 2022. When teams finish level for a division title, a wild-card spot or seeding, the tie is broken on the regular-season record, in this order:
- Head-to-head record between the tied clubs
- Intradivision record (games within the club’s own division)
- Interdivision record (games against the rest of the league)
- Record in the last half of intraleague games, then extending back one game at a time until the tie is broken
Three or more teams
The same steps are applied to the combined records of all tied clubs. Once one club is separated (top or bottom), the remaining clubs restart from step one.
Division titles are settled before wild-card spots, so a club that loses a division tiebreaker can still take a wild card.
Postseason Game Rules
Extra innings
No automatic runner on second in the postseason. Extra innings start with the bases empty and continue until a winner is decided; there are no ties.
Rosters
26-man rosters, set before each series, with a maximum of 13 pitchers. Injured players can be replaced during a series only under the postseason substitution rules.
Off days
Built-in off days fall inside the Division Series, LCS and World Series for travel, which is why a best-of-seven can stretch over nine days.
