How the CFL Playoffs Work
How the CFL playoffs work, explained in plain language: who qualifies (the top three in each division), the crossover rule, why first place is worth a bye and a home Division Final, the three rounds from the Division Semi-Finals to the 113th Grey Cup in Calgary, the points-based tiebreakers and the playoff overtime rules. This applies to the 2026 season, the last under the six-team format.
CFL Playoff Format: Who Qualifies
Six of the nine teams make the Grey Cup playoffs: the top three in the West Division (B.C., Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg) and the top three in the East Division (Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto). Standings are by points, two for a win and one for a tie, so an 18-game season is played for a maximum of 36 points.
Crossover rule: if the fourth-place team in one division has more points than the third-place team in the other, it crosses over and takes that third spot, playing the Semi-Final in the other division. A tie in points does not trigger a crossover; the third-place team keeps its spot. Since the rule took its current form in 1997, twelve teams have crossed over, every one of them from West to East, and none has won the Grey Cup.
The Three Rounds
The second-place team hosts the third-place team (or the crossover team) in each division. Two games on the same Saturday. The first-place teams rest.
Each division winner hosts the Semi-Final winner. The two winners are the East and West champions.
The East champion meets the West champion at a neutral site chosen years in advance: McMahon Stadium in Calgary on November 15, 2026, 6 PM ET.
Byes, Home Field and Ties
The bye
Finishing first in a division is worth a week off and a home Division Final. Only two playoff wins are needed for the Grey Cup from first place; second and third place need three.
Home field
The higher-placed team hosts in both division rounds. The Grey Cup is at a neutral site, so no team gets a home Grey Cup unless it happens to be the host city’s team.
Ties
Regular-season games can end tied after one overtime possession each. Playoff games cannot: overtime continues, with each team getting possession, until one team leads after a complete set.
Tiebreakers
Teams level on points are separated in this order:
- Most wins
- Head-to-head wins between the tied teams
- Head-to-head net points (points for minus points against)
- Net points in all games
- Points scored in all games
- Coin toss
Three or more teams
The same order is applied to the group; once one team is separated, the remaining teams restart from the top. Division standings decide the seed, so a crossover team is always seeded third in the division it joins.

Three downs, bigger field
Three downs instead of four, a 110-yard field with 20-yard end zones, 12 players a side and unlimited motion before the snap, so offences pass more and games swing faster.
Scoring
Touchdown 6, convert 1 (kicked from the 32) or 2 (from the 3), field goal 3, safety 2, and the single or rouge: 1 point when a kick goes through the end zone or is not returned out of it. Regular-season ties are possible after one overtime possession each.
Clock
A three-minute warning in each half instead of two; the clock stops after every play inside those three minutes, which is why late leads are never safe.
